Arrrrrgh! The internet!

Well, for those of you who don't know, the online chat that was supposed to have happened with me and my "Saving Face" co-star Michelle Krusiec onMay 5th, did not.

First and foremost, we should all give a big thank you to Zoe, who organized the chat - she put a lot of work into it and obviously could not have foreseen the craziness that ensued.

Actually, it was pretty funny because I logged on, said hello, and then proceeded to chat with myself for a couple minutes: "How is everyone?" "I thought I was late!" “Where is that Michelle Krusiec?" "Hello?" "Am I here by myself?" "Ha ha, good joke guys!" "Hmmm...." " think I'm talking to myself." "Am I?" "Yes, I am."

When I realized something was wrong, I logged off, but then I couldn't log backon (a problem I guess most people had). I know there is a conspiracy theory that I caused the crash with my jinxed computer, but I think it must have been everyone logging into the server at the same time. To think - there are that many of you!!! That makes me smile.

My apologies to everybody who tried to chat - I know that a lot of you stayed up late and were looking forward to it. We are trying our best to reschedule again, and I'm waiting to hear from Michelle and Zoe about when that will be. I'll keep you posted once I do!

Also, for those of you asking to be notified of any of my television appearances,my "Law and Order" episode ("Teenage Wasteland") will be airing on TNT today, Monday May 8th at 7pm and tomorrow, Tuesday the 9th at 3pm.

Ordering Journey of Prince Jen's free CD and MP3s

About a while ago, Texan had share a website about Lynn sang in a musical-Journey of Prince Jen. After Texan and the Music writer Mr. Seth Weinstein's hard work, Mr. Weinstein has decided to provide MP3s and free CDs for fans.And if you want to get the free CD then please read the follow up information, especially for those who live in overseas.

1. The Journey of Prince Jen web page has been updated. You can now listen to all her songs directly off the Internet.

2. For those who still wish to order the CD, it will cost $5 for shipping but the CD itself is free.

The person should email composer Seth Weinstein at seth@sethweinstein.com and ask for a Prince Jen CD. Include a shipping address to send the CD to, and if the address is not 100% using English alphabet letters (for example, if there's Chinese characters), then please scan an image of the address for Mr. Weinstein to print on a mailing label.
Mr. Weinstein will email back a Paypal invoice for 5 US dollars.
The person pays the invoice with a major credit card like Visa or MasterCard, and then Mr. Weinstein will mail the CD. Overseas packages should arrive within 2 weeks or so.

What's your story?
I started performing really young and took time off to go to school and see what else I could do. Turns out nothing.

What makes up your day?
Unless I'm working on a specific project (in which case my day would be hectic and unpredictable), here's what a typical day looks like: I wake up, work out, go to an audition or two, meet a friend for lunch or coffee, talk to my managers about projects, take my dog for a walk, prepare for the next day's auditions, go to dinner and a movie with my husband (or, make dinner and watch a DVD). Yup, exciting!

Most notable milestones
I'll never forget the feeling of my first time singing in front of a Broadway audience, booking my first TV job, going to Disneyworld to shoot a commercial for one week, and making "Saving Face," my first feature film.

What?s your niche?
Acting is an industry where you spend a lot of time unemployed. So when I'm not actually on a set, I spend a lot of time preparing �� meeting directors and producers, taking classes, staying healthy, reading the trades, and watching a lot of TV (note: the latter is very, very important and crucial to my career. No, really).

Unexpected learnings along the way
There are actually honest and nice people in show business.

What's in store for the future?
A few indie films: the comedy "I'm Through With White Girls," which starts in a few weeks, and the drama, "Mentor," which is in post production. I have perfect pitch. I love shopping malls. I'm really good at making music mixes. I once won a contest sponsored by Durex Condoms where I made a mix of "sexy" songs. I wound up winning money, a limo ride and tickets to the MTV Video Music Awards, and a whole lot of condoms.

I just finished shooting two films but I forgot to bring my camera to set every time. Woops. So I thought I'd share some photos from my youth instead with you this month. I could only find these, where I look scared and angry. But I swear, I was a happy kid. Going along with the whole childhood theme, I'll be answering some questions you asked about my growing up. And, as for how I'm doing presently, I'm a little crazed with auditions for TV pilots, but otherwise, I'm very good.It's hard being rejected for roles on a daily basis, but your letters and gifts have really been making me feel loved and happy, so thank you all for your support. In other news, we just found out that the film I have a small role in, "Mentor," will be at this year's Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. I.m not sure if I'll make it out to the east coast for the premiere, but if you're in the area, check it out and let me know how it is! Q&A
Q: What language did you grow up speaking?
A: Mostly English, and a little Mandarin. No Taiwanese or Cantonese,sadly, but I'd like to learn someday. I went to a joke of a Chinese school on weekends so I'm illiterate.

Q: Were you popular in high school?
A: No, but I wasn't unpopular either. My school was small, and very sports-centered. I had no interest in sports, so I had my own clique of friends in the artsy departments.

Q: Besides singing, what instruments do you play?
A: I have played classical piano on and off since I was five, maybe even earlier. Yes, that is me on the keys in "And That's Okay" and all the other songs too. In high school I took up the drums and oboe and guitar, none of which I was any good at. In college I tried out the erhu (2 string Chinese fiddle) but that wasn��t very successful either.

Q: Did you have a lot of boyfriends?
A: In high school, I had two pretty serious ones. Not that I was actually allowed to date. Then in college I had many...until I met "the one," my junior year. It's been almost nine years now, and we've been married for three in April.

I'm sorry if I'm not very eloquent. I've never accepted an award except for most dangerous costumes in 11th grade for The Pajama Game. So, thank you to my Saving Face family, especially Alice Wu. Without who, I wouldn't be here. It's just really nice to be up here, in a room full of such talented people, whose careers I have followed and obsessed over for years. Lynn Chen is 'Outstanding Newcomer'

Lynn Chen, Asian-American actress, was the people's choice as she took home the 'Outstanding Newcomer' Award at the 2006 Asian Excellence Awards. Sponsored by Remy Martin, the ceremony took place at The Wiltern Theater on January 19th, and will air nationally on the AZN network on January 29th at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT. This is the first time this show will be televised, after airing for 5 years. The awards honor and recognize the achievements made by Asians and Asian-Americans.

Lynn Chen began performing at the age of five, as a singer with the Children's Chorus at The Metropolitan Opera House and on Broadway in the revival of 'South Pacific'. On television, she has had guest starring and recurring roles in a variety of shows, including 'Law and Order', 'Numbers', and 'All My Children'. She received rave reviews for her performance as a lesbian ballet dancer in Sony Pictures Classics' 'Saving Face', which played at Sundance, in addition to a number of other high-profile film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival. Most recently, she finished the indie drama 'Mentor', starring Rutger Hauer and Matt Davis, and will begin filming two more features later this month.

Chen is one of only a handful of Asian-American actresses in her age group who has taken on a major role in Hollywood, making her film debut in the 2005 award-winning and critically ac-claimed 'Saving Face'. The awards honor and recognize the achievements made by Asians and Asian-Americans. With the rising number of Asians in entertainment, the award should garner some national attention for Chen, whose enthusiastic, international fan base helped her win, with tens of thousands of votes.

Chen is one of only a handful of Asian-American actresses in her age group who has taken on a major role in Hollywood, making her film debut in the 2005 award-winning and critically ac-claimed "Saving Face." She beat out fellow nominees Katie Leung ("Harry Potter"), Rex Lee ("Entourage") and Grace Park ("Battlestar Gallactica") in an online poll of more than 60,000 total votes. The award was presented by Hollywood pioneers Nancy Kwan and James Shigeta. After her acceptance speech, Chen walked off the stage, stunned: "I can't believe I was just up there with two legends, and in front of people whose careers I've followed religiously...I'm already so proud to be a part of this community and I really appreciate being acknowledged."

Other honorees included Lucy Liu, Quentin Tarantino, Kimora Lee Simons, and Linkin Park.
Lynn Chen (www.lynnchen.com) began performing at the age of five, as a singer with the Children's Chorus at The Metropolitan Opera House and on Broadway in the revival of "South Pacific." On television, she has had guest starring and recurring roles in a variety of shows, including "Law and Order," "Numbers," and "All My Children."

She received rave reviews for her performance as a lesbian ballet dancer in Sony Pictures Classics' "Saving Face," which played at Sundance, in addition to a number of other high-profile film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival. Most recently, she finished the indie drama "Mentor," starring Rutger Hauer and Matt Davis, and will begin filming two more features later this month.

I've gotten a bunch of letters and emails lately asking me similar questions and I thought I'd do a quick Q&A in this month's newsletter:

Q: What are you working on now?

A: I'm currently shooting two movies, both romantic comedies. One's called "I'm Through With White Girls"and the other is "Platonically." I have supporting roles in both, and my characters are definitely not like "Vivian" in "Saving Face."

Q: What's up with your band, YPOK2?

A: YPOK2 stands for my favorite line in the movie "The Karate Kid" - a line said by the late, great Pat Morita: "You Pretty OK too." It's basically just me, my husband Abe, and our friend Nate, and we do it just for fun during our free time. However,with rising interest, we may start recording more and performing live. One of these days.

Q: Why haven't you written back to me?

A: I can only reply via snail mail to those who send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope, or the money to cover postage. The address is on my webpage, lynnchen.com. For autographed photos, the envelope and postage must be enough to accommodatean 8"x10" picture. If you've already done so and still haven't heard back yet, it's most likely because I haven't had the time yet. I also want you to know that I do read everything that's been sent/emailed to me and I love hearing from you guys, even if I can't tell you personally.

Q: Where can I get "Vivian's" scarf/necklace?

A: I��m not positive, but I believe that the costume designer got the scarf from Urban Outfitters, and the necklace was from some jewelry store in NYC's Chinatown that she had made especially for my character.

Q: Did you gain weight?

A: Ha! The correct question to ask would be, "Did you LOSE weight for 'Saving Face?' " which I did, through a lot of diet and exercise, and only because my character was a ballet dancer. Sorry to burst the bubble, but I'm not naturally as skinny as I was in the movie, and, I think it's important to know that Asian women come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and thatthat's okay. We can't all be Zhang Ziyi! (Or Michelle Krusiec, for that matter!)

For those of you who were able to watch the 2006 Asian Excellence Awards on AZN, you may have noticed that my acceptance speech for "Outstanding Newcomer" seemed a bit short. That's because they cut it!!! The first people I thanked were the fans who voted, and for some insane reason the awards show editors did not think that was important. Well, I happen to think it IS very important and wanted to let you all know that you were acknowledged and appreciated, and you were all at the forefrontof my thoughts when I was up there. After the New York premiere of the film, Lynn Chen sat down with me to talk about her role as the lesbian love interest in Saving Face.

Can you describe how you felt as part of the first Asian American lesbian couple to be featured on the big screen?
When we first were doing this film, nobody knew that little factoid, so when we did find out--from a reporter at Sundance--we were all pleasantly surprised...it was very exciting that we were a part of a film that we did not even realize was so groundbreaking.

What was it like to work with Alice Wu, who was both a first-time director and first-time screenwriter?
In looking back actually, this past year, having seen a lot of films by first-time directors and having been on film sets, I could see how difficult it is to be a director and to be doing it for the first time, not ever having gone to film school. I think she did a tremendous job of being a leader -- she's a natural leader. And not only that; she's very grateful and humble, which is pleasant to be around. I just really trust her taste in general. So whatever she asked me to do, I did with a lot of confidence in her. At the same time, she was open to suggestions and always asked for my input, which, as an actor, is something that you always want from a director, to have that freedom.

Are you concerned about being typecast as a lesbian?
What's funny is that when I was in Nitestar [an HIV education theater company], I played a character named Vivian [coincidentally for another project] who tried to get her girlfriend to come out, and whenever we performed it for audiences that were mostly black and Latino, I always felt really uncomfortable playing this character because, for them, I was already the other. Seeing me as Asian and then also as a lesbian...that suddenly made me feel really different from all of them. I didn't want them to feel that they couldn't relate. I asked to stop playing that character for that reason. However, when we did shows in Chinatown or other areas with a large Asian population, I did want to play that role. When you think Asian, you usually don't think lesbian.
Now, I'm only concerned if it's only going to show the same story or these same sorts of characters...there are so many different types of people in the world, and being a lesbian is only one characteristic of one's personality -- or it may have nothing to do with your personality. Everyone is so different; so my only concern is if we're retelling the same story over and over again. Otherwise, I have no problem playing a lesbian again. But what's funny is that I've been in to audition for about a dozen roles that were lesbians. And it has nothing to do with Saving Face. It just so happens that today, writers have a lesbian as a side character, and so for purposes of diversity, they're more open-minded with the ethnicity for the role as well.

While this is the first film to feature an Asian American lesbian couple, it doesn't push an agenda on the audience. What do you make of that?
People had said to Alice that they wanted her to make it white, or they wanted her to make it Latino, and said 'Why does she [Wil] have to be a lesbian?' When Alice finished writing Saving Face, she was told, 'This is actually quite good. I could sell the story but could you make the characters white?' Or, 'Why couldn't you make the love interest a white man?' She said no, it has to be a lesbian.

Since Ma represents--at least at the beginning--the more conservative values of parents, what do you think of how the relationship played out between Ma and Wil?
I think that in Chinese families, in families in general, when you picture your parents, you picture them as all-knowing; they make no mistakes. Wil has been the perfect Chinese daughter to her mother in every way except for the fact that she's not going to marry a nice Chinese boy. It's when she sees that her mother is not perfect and has made pretty much the biggest mistake that a woman her age could make in that community, that's what makes her much more human and ultimately what brings them closer together, that realization that her mother is fallible.

How did your parents react to your role in Saving Face?
My parents were both fine. I've been told by Alice that my parents are very rare in that they're so open about homosexuality. Basically, they don't think there's anything wrong with it, so that's sort of how they looked at this role too. I wasn't afraid to tell them that; it was more the nudity thing.

Are you concerned about a general response from the Asian community?
Naively, I went into this thinking 'no big deal.' From what I hear, the Chinese press has been amazingly supportive, which is pretty incredible. Yet, the other day, an interviewer from the Chinese press grimaced whenever I said 'lesbian.' She had seen the movie and liked it, but she still was not okay with the idea of an actual woman liking another woman. It wasn't a reality to her.

Since gay marriage and gay rights are such a hot topic right now, how do you think Saving Face fits into that political discussion?
I think the main problem that conservatives in America have with gays in Hollywood is that they have helped to normalize homosexuality. This film is not extreme in any way. It's not jarring or in your face, so I think for most audiences that see this, they don't separate themselves from the characters in the same way they might with Queer Eye... or Will & Grace. This really humanizes it and these characters are a lot more relatable than other people you might see. Wil and Vivian are not your stereotypical, stock gay characters. Today's conservatives are trying to create and capitalize on hysteria over the 'gay agenda,' when in fact, the only agenda that gay people have is the human agenda: to love and be loved.

I'm a little crazed right now, as I am about to start shooting two films at the end of this month, but I wanted to send out aspecial note telling all of you how appreciative I am that so many of you took the time to vote for me for "OutstandingNewcomer" at the 2006 Asian Excellence Awards. In case you don't know already, I won!!! Above are some photos myhusband took of the event, including one of me and Alice Wu, the director of "Saving Face." I was told I won by a landslidein a total of over 60,000 votes. I am so completely overwhelmingly happy about your enthusiasm and I wanted to letyou know how grateful I am.
